I’ve met a lot of people in numerous industries, and I’ve noticed that many of them do the same things – even though they don’t talk about it. Being successful and pursuing your dream is not a 9-5 job – it’s a 24/7 lifestyle. Everything you do, everything you think about, and almost all your actions revolve around your specific endeavor.
Whether it’s writing, music, business development, product creation, acting, etc, successful people in every field share similar strategies in making their dreams a reality. Character is who you are when no-one is watching, and successful people embody that theory.
1. They Work Non-Stop
Now if you ask anyone if successful people work hard, 99% percent of people would say of course. It might seem almost pointless to start off with this one – but it’s extremely important. While most people have an idea of how hard they work, it’s only that – an idea. The truth is, successful people work non-stop. From the time that they wake up until the time they go to bed, they’re working on numerous projects and trying to maximize each day to it’s fullest. Every single person has 86,400 seconds in a day, but some people get more use out of them than others.
2. They Failed A Shitload
I couldn’t think of a better way to title this section. Before the internet, it almost seemed like people popped up out of nowhere. Eddie Cantor stated it takes 20 years to make an overnight success, and too many people never see how much they failed. Even with the internet now, with everything being documented, so many failures go un-noticed (for valid reasons obviously). Remember that every failure only brings you closer to success, and every successful person has failed tons of times to get to where they are now.
3. They Didn’t Network – They Aligned
I hate the idea of “networking,” as it’s an overused buzzword. What successful people realize is that it isn’t enough to network with people, as it’s a cheap and shallow way to get what you want. They realize you have to genuinely align with successful people, regardless if they’re in your industry or not. You’re the sum of the 5 people you interact with the most, as the language of success is universal. They key to aligning with the right people is looking at them as your friend and interacting with them normally – not as a business partner.
4. They Delay Gratification
Delayed Gratification is the ability to resist the temptation for an immediate reward and wait for a later reward. Successful people are masters of this, as they understand that waiting until later is the only way to completely live your dreams. It’s easy to jump at the first opportunity that’s presented, and the key to truly being successful is knowing when to turn down opportunities – even if that temporarily sets you back. The key to sticking to your guns is having a strong vision, which leads me into my last point.
5. They Have A Rock-Hard Vision
This, above anything, is the most important trait among successful people. They all have an incredibly strong and rock-hard vision, as that’s what keeps them going. Having a solid vision is what keeps them working away when times are extremely tough. When it seems like there’s no evidence of succeeding, their vision is what keeps them working despite their current situation. They rehearse their vision every day, eventually getting closer and closer, until the point where it’s their reality.
Even if you’re not successful yet, work your ass off and follow your heart. The benefits are well worth it, and eventually you’re reality will be better than any dream you could have.
